Ellen
I'm a sixth generation Texas cattle rancher with a love for continued learning, travel, fitness, and culinary adventures. While our family's ranch is steeped with history, we've never let tradition hold us back from progress and innovation.
Being an essential business, the virus hasn't disrupted much of our day-to-day work routine. No matter what is going on in the world ranchers have to care for our cattle, continue with land improvement projects, and equipment maintenance. Unfortunately, cattle sales have been slower this spring because of economic uncertainty, but we have seen a big increase in demand for locally-sourced beef. As a result, we are working to expand that aspect of our business.
I am also a member of the Texas Beef Team. My favorite race was my first ever run wearing the Texas Beef Team jersey - The San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo 5k. Although I cannot train as normal, staying active has continued to remain my best therapy. Taking time for physical activity, whether it be strength training, yoga, or running, always seems to improve my mood and outlook on the world and my life. When I'm out checking cattle on pasture I like to take time to walk along the creeks and ponds, listen to the birds, and admire the beauty I'm lucky to be surrounded by.
Keeping myself motivated to workout has been difficult at times. When I try to talk myself out of it, I remind myself how much my mood lifts and my body feels alive after putting in some effort. I've been keeping up with virtual running, yoga, and strength training routines my gym has been creating. I've also been trying out new types of fitness like barre and have enjoyed the challenge of a new form of exercise.
Unlike so many others, I've been fortunate that I didn't have a major disruption to my daily routine and that has helped with my emotional and mental well being. It's been hard coming to terms with all the things I am missing out on, lost opportunities, lost connections, but when I'm outside among nature I feel inspired to thrive in this new way of life.
